Mineral Canyon Base Jumping Fatality 3/21/2014

LOCATION OF OCCURANCE: Mineral Canyon 1 mile east of Mineral Bottom Boat Launch

On Friday the 21st of March a 35 year old male, base jumping from the cliffs above Mineral Canyon suffered fatal injuries when he jumped in an area known as the “sweet spot”.  The accident occurred approximately 7:00 p.m and Grand County Sheriff’s Office was notified when friends were able to obtain cell service from that area. Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue responded to that area which is approximately 40 miles west of Moab. Lifegaurd helicopter was also dispatched to the area. Because of the location and the difficulty recovering the jumper the recovery was initiated again at 6:30 a.m on the 22nd . Search and Rescue was able to lower the jumper to the bottom with several belays down an extreme tallus slope. The recovery was complete at approximately 12:30 p.m. The distance from the top of the cliff to location of the jumper is estimated to be 400 feet.

     The name of the jumper is being withheld pending notification.
